Where Hunger Ends .... Hope Begins

At age 47, Shawn had been homeless for several years. An alcohol addiction combined with poor decisions had resulted in unstable employment, prison time and a broken relationship. He was left with nothing but the clothes on his back and a few meager belongings in two duffle bags. He lived out of his car or got a motel room when he could afford it. Then last winter, with no money left for gasoline or a place to stay, he found himself on the streets.  “It was so cold and I was so hungry,” he says.  “I finally bowed down, swallowed my pride and came to Victory Mission.”

When people are weak from hunger—when homelessness and despair have destroyed their hope and self-esteem—it’s easy for them to think there’s no way out of their desperate situations.

But with your help this Thanksgiving season,
where hunger ends . . . hope begins.

It costs the Mission about $2.30 to serve a plate piled high with meat, vegetables, bread, fruit and other nutritious items. As hunger fades, hearts and minds are opened to possibilities for change, growth and transformation through guidance and training we provide.

During the Thanksgiving season, we’ll have many special opportunities to turn hunger to hope for people like Shawn.

  • We’ll provide more than 1,600 wholesome meals during Thanksgiving week to our residents and guests and to homeless and hungry neighbors.
  • On Thanksgiving Day, we’ll serve a traditional dinner for over 600 at our community meal.
  • We’ll also distribute more than 800 meals-to-go to struggling families, lonely senior citizens and the homebound.

Remember, it costs us about $2.30 to provide a meal and care this Thanksgiving season—and every day of the year. Please give today and bring hope to people who are hungry for a new beginning.
